 What is Climate Change?

According to the United Nations, climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Such shifts can be natural, due to changes in the sun’s activity or large volcanic eruptions. However, since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas.

Effects of Climate Change on Us and the Environment

Temperature Rise and Heatwaves

The last decade has been the hottest on record, with significant impacts worldwide. In India, temperatures have skyrocketed, with places like Delhi experiencing highs of 52.1°C. Heatwaves have become more frequent and intense, leading to health crises. India reported nearly 25,000 suspected heatstroke cases and 56 deaths from March to May 2023 alone.

Extreme Weather Events

Climate change has increased the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events such as heavy downpours, hurricanes, and flooding. For instance, Sri Lanka recently experienced severe flooding and landslides due to heavy monsoon rains, resulting in multiple fatalities.

Impact on Natural Resources

The rapid rise in global temperatures has had a detrimental effect on natural resources. Deforestation is a significant issue, with India losing approximately 19.3 million hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2020. Additionally, the reliance on coal for electricity production in India contributes significantly to air pollution and global warming.

Sea Level Rise

Rising global temperatures cause polar ice to melt, leading to sea level rise. This increases the risk of coastal flooding and can displace communities, disrupt ecosystems, and threaten freshwater supplies.

Individual Efforts for a Better Climate Condition

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

  • Use Cloth Bags: Opt for cloth bags instead of plastic ones for shopping.
  • Replace Disposable Items: Use paper partyware instead of plastic ones.
  • Carry Your Own Water Bottle: Reduce the use of plastic bottles by carrying a reusable water bottle.

Save Electricity

  • Switch Off Lights: Always turn off lights and electrical devices when not in use.
  • Use LED Lamps: LED lights are more energy-efficient and last longer than traditional bulbs.

Sustainable Transportation

  • Walk or Cycle: Walking or cycling to nearby destinations reduces your carbon footprint and benefits your health.

Support Sustainable Products

  • Use Refills: Opt for refillable products, from pens to skincare items.
  • Shop Ethically: Support brands that prioritize ethical and sustainable production practices.

Promote Reforestation

  • Plant Trees: Planting trees on your birthday or other special occasions helps replenish forests and reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
  • Seed Bombs: Make and use seed bombs to grow plants in barren areas. This practice, rooted in ancient Japanese techniques, can help restore greenery.

Spread Awareness

Educate yourself and others about climate change and its effects. Awareness can lead to more informed and conscious decisions that collectively make a significant impact.

Conclusion

Climate change is a critical issue that requires immediate action. While global policies and industrial changes are crucial, individual efforts also play a significant role in mitigating its effects. By making small, conscious choices in our daily lives, we can contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment for future generations.
